KOUGEI EXPO IN AICHI theme is 100 Years of Love, 1000 Years of Love.
The essence of KOUGEI [craft] having lived and breathed in the land for so long is like 100 years of users loving “things” and 1000 years of creators loving “things”; the sentimental and compassionate theme.

What are Traditional Crafts?
The term “Traditional Crafts” refers to those designated by the Law for the Promotion of Traditional Craft Industries (Densan Law). “Traditional” means that “the main raw materials, techniques and methods distinctive of the craft handed down to today. Items preserving the craft characteristics while improving it to fit the industrial environment and the time demands”. By the law, a “traditional craft” must have the following requirements.

  1. The article must be used mainly in everyday life
  2. The article must be primarily manufactured by hand
  3. The article must preserve the traditional techniques
  4. The article’s materials must be the traditionally used ones
  5. The article must form a specific regional production centre

As of January 2021, there are 236 “traditional crafts” designated by METI throughout Japan (15 in Aichi Prefecture).
