Yamaguchi: Halal menu to get a boost via recipe

Yamaguchi Prefectural Tourism Federation created a series of videos on halal recipes such as tempura and sushi.
As the videos are for improving the dining environment for Muslims, they expected to be of use in developing halal menus in restaurants and lodging facilities.

There are six halal recipe videos released, include tempura, sushi and kawara soba (a local dish from Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi).

The videos have simple instructions on the keys to cooking halal foods and tips on choosing ingredients; Muslims can rest assured. All the videos are available on Yamaguchi Prefectural Tourism Federation’s YouTube channel. They are like any recipe/cooking videos, so even cooking staffs who aren’t familiar with halal cooking can easily follow them.

With the global spread of Covid-19 still unabated, the foreign visitor numbers to Japan in January and February 2021 have fallen sharply, by around 99% compared to the same period last year. Nevertheless, perhaps some preparations can be made now when the tourism industry is in a difficult situation.

It is not always easy to create a halal-friendly kitchen or develop menus for Muslims during regular operation. This difficult time could be an opportunity for businesses to be ready to welcome Muslims and others with dietary restrictions, something they may not have done before.

We hope that more parts of Japan will be more prepared to welcome Muslims once the international traffic resumes soon.
