World’s first! 7-Eleven Japan tests floating cash register

The COVID-19 pandemic led to a rapid uptake of new technologies.

Seven-Eleven Japan, the largest convenience store operator in Japan, introduced what may be the world’s first self-checkout system using ‘aerial display’ technology.

The aerial display operates using infrared light that reads your finger movements. Since users can use the device without touching the screen, it can be a tool to prevent the spread of infection.

This system is currently in use at three shops in Tokyo on a trial basis from 2 February.
